Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)

Gum Disease: The Most Common Cause of Tooth Loss in Adults

More commonly known as gum disease, periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases that adults from around the world encounter. Many dental conditions come from this disease; some can even become serious that affect the heart and respiratory system.

Periodontal disease starts as an infection of the gum tissues in between the teeth. The Sulcus, which is the V-shaped gum portion, found between each tooth is a perfect candidate for tartar build-up and as a breeding ground for bacteria. As infection progresses in the gums, this may cause its cohesiveness with the tooth enamel to loosen and for the gums to recede. This will then create a pocket will be created where more bacteria may reside. The bigger the pocket size, the more severe the disease.

Periodontal diseases may also be classified into two categories; the first is the more prevalent, popularly known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is the initial and milder form of a periodontal disease, at this stage it is still reversible. If left untreated, it can evolve to a more serious condition known as periodontitis, sadly, this is somewhat irreparable. Periodontitis can cause severe damage to the tissues of the gums and also result to bone loss.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease includes:

  • Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing your teeth
  • Pain while chewing
  • Red, sore, swollen gums
  • Build up of calculus (tartar)
  • Bad breath or bad taste
  • Loss of teeth
  • Teeth sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Changes in bite
  • Gums that have withdrawn from teeth and in between teeth

We here at A Smiling Place can help you prevent periodontal disease from happening and save your smile. A comprehensive dental examination can determine whether you are the onset of gingivitis. We can also diagnose properly, through an x-ray examination the extent of the damage and the size of the pocket developing. Our priority is preserving our clients beautiful smiles.
